Psychology-informed coaching and therapy/counselling do have something in common. Both disciplines use emotional intelligence and in-depth psychology to support people.
The simplest way to draw a distinction between them is to look at what people ask of the practitioner.
You would come for coaching if what was on your mind could be summed up as:
- 'Help me sort this out'
- 'Help me improve my current situation'
- 'Help me make intelligent choices'
- 'Help me make changes that will stick and will make a difference'
In the Wellbeing context, you might also come to a coach if you were thinking:
- 'Help me get on with my life / work'
- 'Help me enjoy the little things, the everyday, being alive'
- 'Help me live my best life'
The emphasis would be different is you were seeking therapy/counselling. The primary request from a client there would be:
> 'Help me feel Ok'
> 'Help me make sense to myself'
> 'Help me keep myself together'
