How I Work

Coaching

"What I actually do is help my clients see their world differently. Because when you help someone see their world differently, their world changes. When someone sees their world differently, they show up differently, and they create results that booked impossible a moment before. That is a miracle."

Rich Litvin, coach and author of 'The Prosperous Coach'

Coaching

Coaching: help with making changes
It is normal to seek help by speaking with friends. It is normal for friends to do their best to help you where they can.

Chances are, there are changes your friends have not been able to help you make.

Speaking with a coach is like speaking to the friend you wish you had, who has the clarity and clout to guide you to the solutions you've been seeking.
Get unstuck
There is an aspect of your life that has felt stuck for a long time.

You could stay where you are for a bit longer and see if it gets better on its own.

Wait. You've already tried that. It didn't work.

You have already played the game of 'What do I have to lose by staying put?' so you already know the answer: the chance to live more vividly.
What you have to lose
YOU ALREADY KNOW THIS
The time of your life
Staying stuck might be comfortable, relatively speaking, but it comes at a price.

It steals from the life you could be living, the life that is *uniquely yours*.
The 'comfort' of staying stuck
The comfort of what you know has its appeal.

This pales in comparison to the life you could be getting used to, though!

SOME THINGS A COACH KNOWS
Think better
Update Your map
Re-frame
Thinking: Focused and Diffused
Did you know that there are two types of thinking?

The discovery of Focused and Diffused thinking modes is revolutionising fields like teaching and learning.

Briefly, when we try to focus in exclusively on something, we lose a lot of the 'surrounding' information. Alternating Focused and Difficused modes allows you to build up a much more comprehensive picture of any situation - and spot those 'hidden' opportunities.
Update your operating map
We all operate in the world based on how we view the world - you could call it your 'operating map'.

Everybody's map develops glitches, areas that you haven't updated since you were a tiny tot, conclusions you'd reached in a hurry which have been misleading you ever since.

I can help you identify where your inner map has gone astray, and help you update it so it lets you navigate your world much more reliably.
Get a 3D perspective on your situation
Your expectations frame where you look.

This makes it hard for you to see 'outside the box'. A coach will prompt you to turn your attention to areas you haven't considered, leading you to discover whole dimensions to your challenge that you had not been aware of.

Once you have something 'in your picture', you have more options for how to handle it.

Brief history of coaching
COACHING HAS A UNIQUE HISTORY
1550s
1550s
The word 'coach' comes into common use
In the 1550s, the word 'coach' came to denote 'a large kind of four-wheeled, covered carriage,' from from Hungarian kocsi (szekér), which originally meant '(carriage) of Kocs,' the village where this style of carriage was first made. Vehicles often were named for the place of their invention or first use.

Oxford University slang for a private tutor
In 1830s Oxford University slang, 'coach' meant a private tutor who 'carries' a student through an exam. This transition reflected the contemporary association of travelling by coach withspeed and expediency.

First appearance of 'coach' as a term in sports

Changing how we work and play
When first published in 1974, Timothy Gallwey's book 'Inner Game of Tennis' was a real revelation.

Instead of serving up technique, it concentrated on the fact that, as Gallwey wrote, "Every game is composed of two parts, an outer game and an inner game." The former is played against opponents, and is filled with lots of contradictory advice; the latter is played not against, but within the mind of the player, and its principal obstacles are self-doubt and anxiety.

Maximising performance in business and beyond
Coaching is increasinly the go-to process for enhancing workplace performance (especially in the United States).

Coaching commonly relies on one-on-one conversations and focuses on goals and performance.
FAQs
You might be wondering

Q:
Do you use any specific methodologies?
A:
I work with a number of coaching methodologies, most commonly something called GROW.

GROW is a popular coaching methodology. The title is a mnemonic, which decodes like this:

Goals (where you want to be headed)
Reality (where you're currently at)
Options / Obstacles (for your path ahead)
Will - which path you will choose for your journey

In our work together, I help you map out and triangulate the 'territory' you're travelling, making the path ahead much clearer.

I also draw on a portfolio of other approaches from coaching and practical psychology, because there is no one answer to everything.
GROW: get clear on the path ahead
Build up a map of the 'terrain' you're traversing, and things start to fall into place

People often rush into trying to plot the path ahead, and then get stuck.

To help people recognise what has been tripping them up, I offer this analogy with travelling:

You tell me that you want to go surfing (for example), and have been looking at travel websites/train timetables, and can't find anything that will get you there.

When we explore together, it turns out that your definition of your intended destination has been a bit vague.

You can imagine that trying to find a train to 'somewhere in the West Country' is not likely to be productive.

To travel successfully, you need to start by 'triangulating' two points:
  • where you want to get to (your Goal / Destination)
  • where you're starting from (your current Reality)

Here's where GROW can help.
GROW: map out your journey one step at a time
Four clearly-defined steps get you 'travel-ready' and on your way:

Goal (your intended destination)
Reality (where you're currently at)
Options and Obstacles (the *how* of getting from here to there)
Will (the exact path you choose that suits you best)
Goal
This stage of our work gets you crystal-clear on the destination you're aiming for. We build up a 'Design Brief', so that the solutions you devise in our work together take care of *all* your needs and requirements
Reality
You can only start plotting a journey when you're clear where you're starting from. Sometimes this includes gathering together where you've been to get you here, too.
Options and Obstacles
We get you to pull together all the obstacles you're concerned about and shift into recognising more of the options available to you. It is only then that you can consider which path you might choose.
Will - the choices you'll make
Choosing may still be hard. This is when you need to remember why you set out on this journey in the first place.

A coach is a skilled professional who aligns themselves with your goals and helps you achieve them.
How do you decide who you want to work with?
I respect that you would have concerns when thinking about working with anyone on something so subtle and intimate as your inner world.

What's on your mind?

My focus in talking with people considering coaching is my commitment to helping you succeed. Let's talk about what problem you want to solve and what the optimal solution for you might look like.

If it turns out that working together is a good fit for both sides, we can go from there.

This initial conversation is completely FREE and does not imply any obligation on either party.

What's at stake?
If you keep hanging back and not reaching for a solution, all the problems you keep hoping to resolve go unsolved.

All the results you hoped to achieve are not attained.

If you buy a solution and it does not meet your needs, you waste a great amount of money and time, and still miss the intended benefits.

With each additional attempt to create a solution, you are likely to feel more cynicism and resistance, and less likelihood of success.

I get that!

That's why I make time to talk to people when they're considering coaching with me.

It creates an opportunity to arrive at a solution that completely meets your needs, through mutual exploration.
Let's talk
a solution that exactly meets your needs
The best (perhaps the only) way to arrive at a solution that exactly meets your needs is through mutual exploration.

This means we mutually explore with you a solution that truly meets your needs - whether you eventually get that solution with ByHeart or with someone else.
